PowerA Universal Remote Case for iPhone 3G/3GS
Though we've seen a couple of other similar accessories in prototype form, BDA/PowerA is the first to market with its Universal Remote Case for iPhone 3G/3GS ($60), a combination of a traditional iPhone case with a slide-on Infrared remote control attachment and an iPhone OS application. In its simplest form, the glossy black case looks just like any other for the iPhone -- an advantage over bulkier competitors -- but you can slip off the bottom and attach the Infrared transmitter as a slightly longer replacement. A blue light illuminates to let you know it's powered on, drawing from the iPhone's battery. On first connection, the Case triggers the iPhone to download the free Universal Remote application from the App Store, which enables you to use your existing remote to help the app learn to control your TV and favorite devices -- not entirely intuitively, as it turns out, though an instruction manual helps with the experience. A version of the case sized for the iPod touch is coming in June.
